Serena Williams Won't Celebrate Daughter's Birthday Because She Is 'Jehovah Witness'


Serena Williams' daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian turns 1 this week but her mother will not celebrate her birthday. The tennis legend has confirmed that she will not be celebrating her baby girl’s first birthday, due to her beliefs as a Jehovah’s Witness. She made this known while speaking at a press conference at the US Open.

A reporter asked Serena: "Is there a birthday party planned?" And Serena replied:
"Olympia doesn’t celebrate birthdays. We’re Jehovah’s Witnesses, so we don’t do that."

Though Serena’s husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, did not grow up in a religious household, it is believed that he is now practicing with his wife.
Speaking to Vogue last year, Serena said:
"Being a Jehovah’s Witness is important to me, but I’ve never really practised it and have been wanting to get into it. Alexis didn’t
grow up going to any church, but he’s really receptive and even takes the lead. He puts my needs first."

@Creo: Her Jehovah Witness thing is funny. If she values it, let her withdraw from all the public activities JW forbids. I think she just want to use this to trend. I doubt if her husband Ohanian, the owner of reddit, still goes to JW meeting because Tech guys have no time for religion

Hahahaha...This chic na big joke. She should tell that bullshit to toddler's not people like us. JW doesn't sing national anthem or serve any nation, they don't identify with any league of nations or take pride in a country, race or tribe. But she represents her country in sports and now coming to yank off this trash from her mouth.

I respect her humility, making her faith priority over her personality! It humbled people, when one of the world figures, pst Sam adeyemi announced to his congregation/friends that he was not led to celebrate his 50th birthday! His affluent friends/well wishers who wanted to display their status, and prove their love for him, were angry, people like us have more respect and love for him. Fashola did it also, during his tenure as the Lagos state governor, he refused to lavish the state fund on his birthday...saying there are better things to do with the money, than spending it for birthday. People like that earn my respect! Kudos for Serena Williams.
